Back with his first release of 2019 is the Birmingham based artist T8PES. Joining his on this collab track is local singer songwriter Holly Fitzgerald. Drawing influence from recent politics, T8PES has made “Hope & Pray” relatable for listeners all around the world. Taking inspiration in the lyrics, from 70’s bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, it’s described as nothing more than a protest track.
Rhythmically, every things in place for a lovely arrangement. Looped drums filled with groove and grit are making the spoken word track feel more hip hop based. Relating back to the early noughties where artists would mix trip hop with other sub genres, like Zero 7 for example, it feels that T8PES music is starting a revival of that genre. Comforting vocals from Holly secure our safety harness in hope that things will change as a world. As a whole, the track is a cry for help towards standing up for ourselves and going against the system. Personal but honest track and it’s so great to hear that within a local artist.
Score: 3.5/5
