Singer-songwriter Don Mai returns with breathtaking new single, ‘Caught Up‘. In this interview, we spoke about hidden talents, musical influences and dream collaborations.
To anyone new to your music, name 3 words that best describe your sound.
Pop, catchy and varied
Introduce yourself and your hidden talent!
Hi my name is Don, I’m a singer/songwriter/producer and my hidden talent is playing badminton! I never had any lessons but played weekly for fun as a kid and I found out that I’m actually decent playing again as an adult.
What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?
Majority of the time I start my songs with a chord progression of some type of melody that I can vibe with. After I’ll either go in two separate directions, the first is I’ll finish the song including lyrics and then produce it or I’ll fully produce the song and then just freestyle over the track.
Who are your main musical influences and why?
Jon Bellion, Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran, Lauv and Charlie Puth. These artist are amazing
songwriters and producers. Not only do they write amazing songs for themselves but also for many other artists. Songwriters really don’t get enough credit for the work they do!
If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
Jon Bellion. I’ve watched many “The making of” videos of Jon on Youtube where it shows his creative process when writing a song. I feel extremely inspired and motivated every time I watch one of those video and never seem to get bored of it. To be able to go through that process with him in person would be on a another level!
