I had a catch up with incredible artist Melanie Masson and we chatted all things music. Having rose to fame when auditioning for the X Factor with her amazing rendition of Janis Joplin’s ‘Cry Baby’, Melanie is now taking centre stage in her latest single ‘Seasons’. Read further to find out why she chose to cover the legendary Future Islands track.
Hey Melanie, how are you keeping during these strange times?
I’m good thanks. It’s such a weird time right now. I’m keeping busy and trying to stay positive. I’m loving spending so much time with my family, that’s been a real luxury and to be able to have the kids at home, I even love the home schooling! I’ve been doing a lot of online concerts and performing from my living room and front door which has been fun. I’ve also been busy with my new single and video. I’m also lucky to have two of my best friends live so close to me but I am missing my family around the country. I’m missing performing to a big audience too and also attending concerts, theatre and festivals. I think when this is all over, I’ll just be hugging random strangers!
Congratulations on another great single. What made you decide to cover the Future Islands track?
I first saw Future Islands perform on The Jools Holland Show and also at Glastonbury. I was struck by their passion, performance and great songs. When I heard them perform Seasons, I just felt connected to the melody and lyric and I thought how well it would work as a Northern Soul record.
Now, you’ve had quite the career so far, if you could pick, what’s been your best (or favourite) musical achievement to date?
One of my favourite performances was being able to headline a show at The Royal Albert Hall. It’s such an iconic venue and so many legendary artists have performed on that stage, it felt like a real honour and the acoustics and sound are second to none. I also always love performing at G-A-Y in London as the audience is amazing.
If you could describe your sound in 3 words that begin with M, what would they be?
Melodic, meaningful and memorable!
What’s in store for you for the rest of 2021?
Staying safe and happy and healthy, keeping those close to me safe, happy and healthy and also releasing lots more music.
