Oystercatcher – It Never Rains

Manchester based duo Oystercatcher return with their haunting new release ‘It Never Rains’. A track that showcases true emotion and stunning imagery, the track nudges icons such as James Blake, Kate Bush and Muse. ‘It Never Rains’ is based around delicacy and self-reflection. Oystercatcher stated that, “It Never Rains’ uses soaring strings combined with jagged guitar hooks and ethereal production, giving way to honest and raw vocals.” With the origin of their name being influenced by a type of bird that lives on the beaches near vocalist Caitlin’s family in North Wales, the duo’s music has a comforting, homely aspect to it’s core.
Building into an experimental track with alternative rock sensibilities, ‘It Never Rains’ is a track not frightening to do it’s on thing. Completely innovative and thinking outside the box, Oystercatcher are a duo drowning in individuality. ‘It Never Rains… it pours’ is a powerful lyric that is completely true. Influenced by the sounds of art rock, folk, pop and alternative, Oystercatcher are known for their boldness. A captivating ensemble destined for greatness, this duo explore hard-hitting themes in their music. With their debut EP ‘This Too Shall Pass’ being released very soon, Oystercatcher will be sat on my playlist comfortably from here on out.

Vibrant trio Thrillhouse return with their fifth single of the year ‘If It’s Important’. Carving their way through the indie scene good and proper, Thrillhouse are stating that they’re a strong asset to the scene. This Brighton based trio question their life choices in the latest single, and said that ‘If It’s Important’ is “a kinda love letter to those that help you through the shit times and to anyone that pushes you to achieve your dreams however foolish they may seem.” Recorded during the peak of lockdown via separate places, ‘If It’s Important’ has come together like it was never apart. Sounding like it was recorded live in the same room, the colourful soundscape showcases a band filled with optimism.

Mehalah Ray – Nevermind

Folk pop songstress Mehalah Ray is a British singer-songwriter from Cambridge. Armed with an honest vocal tone and an enchanting performance, her new single ‘Nevermind’ is soulful and something to get lost in. On the release, Mehalah mentioned, “I had a very confusing year where I was over working myself and trying to stay present at all times when actually it was extremely self-destructive. I had to make the decision to let things go and disconnect in order to move forward more healthily. Nevermind is basically a track that embodies a big sigh of relief after doing the hard work of setting yourself free.”
An authentic track with room to breathe, ‘Nevermind’ features a DIY atmosphere that unravels into a polished, captivating production. A laid-back single with layers of maturity to it’s core, the lyrics are infectious and fuelled with relatability. Instrumentally, the track is bathed with steady drums, warm vocals, mesmerising guitar melodies and has the power to captivate a listener and pause time. Capturing letting go and moving forwards, the easy-listening indie-folk anthem is a step in the right direction for this songwriter. Passionate and heartfelt, Mehalah Ray’s career is one to keep an eye on.

Katherine Evans – Make You Mine

LA based singer-songwriter Katherine Evans unleashes her summer influenced new anthem ‘Make You Mine’. Exploring the beauty and excitement of a new relationship, there’s layers of uncertainty within the lyrics too, giving the track a perfect balance. Katherine Evans illustrated that, “Make You Mine is a bittersweet story about trying to love someone who struggles to love themselves. I think romanticizing someone’s damage and thinking that you can be the one to fix them is so human. This song is slightly hopeful, but also solemn. I wanted to call myself out for my tendency to stay in relationships for too long, envisioning a happy ending that part of me knows is not going to happen.”
Split into two sides of hope and optimism, the other side of ‘Make You Mine’ feels insecure on the relationship. A playful single with that’s destined for you to be singing into your hairbrush microphone, the euphoric number is filled with excitement and endless amounts of freedom. A refreshing artist that has a passion for emotional, dark pop, Katherine Evans is a young pop star with room to grow but she knows what she wants. ‘Make You Mine’ is out now, and deserves commercial success.
