Pretty Indie #4

Two incredible artists for you to get your ears around today. Both releases reside in a transcending indie atmosphere that will have you floating in the clouds.

MY LIFE STORY – I’M A GOD

Released a few months back, “I’m A God” is still playing loud in my head, even when I’m away from the actual music. Lead by charismatic frontman Jake Shillingford, the new single by My Life Story is not an autobiographical reference to singer/songwriter Jake’s on-stage pop star moves but a shopping list of deities, some more deserving of reverence than others. Shillingford said; “I wanted to highlight how the media lazily awards everything and everyone divine status and consider if worshiping false gods is embedded in our DNA.  I remember reading that even Prince Phillip was seen as a god by the Yaohnanen people”

Musically, the track breathes energy from a stunning synth based beginning into a brit-pop ballad that would have soared in the late ’90s and early 00s. There’s a sense of nostalgia in this release that will leave you thinking of yesteryear with a smile on your face. The single is bathed in contemporary indie elements yet is able to look back and would be able to find a place in your CD collection from years ago. There’s something soothing about the release that will leave you coming back for more and that’s the honesty and story behind it all.

CROOK ON THE WALL – IMPERIAL MIND

A debut single that proves this band mean business, “Imperial Mind” is straight to the point and refuses to be left on any back burner. The debut from Manchester based band Crook On The Wall is gritting and tells a coming of age story. What makes this release even more incredible is that the members of band are aged between 14 and 16 and already sound like they’ve been making music professionally for years. Could you imagine the potential of what’s to come? Their could be a new face for indie music in Manchester within a matter of months!

Imperial Mind’ sets out the teenaged four-pieces’s intentions with authority and panache. It provides deep insight into many politically challenging areas of society while also showcasing their musicianship that belies their young ages. Telling the industry that they mean business and shouldn’t be pushed aside because of their age, “Imperial Mind” is a cracking debut single that details strength and a nudge to iconic artists such as The Smiths and the Stone Roses. Primarily indie, the track itself has elements of new-wave and could have easily been heard in the middle of the ’80s. The next 5 years are going to be huge for this band and you heard it here first.
