Interview with Connor Mac

Introducing 24-year-old Connor Mac, a New Zealand singer songwriter with a uniquely soulful and organic sound. His debut self-produced UK single ‘Purpose’ is out now via Moretone Music.

To anyone new to your music, name 3 words that best describe your sound?

Smooth organic Pop

What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?

I generally will write all the music and melodies first before moving on to the lyrics… I will then ponder on different themes before finalising a direction. Although, I will often write down lyrically ideas in my notes to use as ‘jump off points’ when it comes to putting words to melodies.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

I think collaborating with Prince would be my top choice. I feel it would be so entertaining and educational watching his process in person… so much knowledge to absorb!

What’s the best advice you’d give to your younger self?

Don’t sit on your music for so long. Get it finished while it’s exciting and release it before you find yourself going down a different direction a year or so on. I have so many songs stored away I wish I had released years ago!
