Interview with Jonny Spalding

Introducing UK songwriter-composer-producer, Jonny Spalding. Jonny grew up in Norfolk before moving to London at 18 to study Music Composition & Technology. After Graduating, Jonny played in a couple of cover and original bands, before forming The Kubrick’s, with some good friends. Following years of writing songs, making demo’s, playing gigs around the UK, The Kubrick’s began to gain popularity on the Ska/2-Tone circuit, often selling out famous venues as The Dublin Castle, following the footsteps of their Ska heroes Madness & The Specials.

What made you decide that music is the right path for you?

Although a little clichéd, I don’t think I choose music but that it was ingrained in my everyday life. I always loved music from a young age. I started playing the keyboards and then experimented with the beats (who remembers the Bossa-nova beat!) and then writing melodies. I’ve always loved music and write something every single day, even small bits!

What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?

It’s changed massively over the years. I used to write all my songs, organically, at a piano, normally starting with chords and then melodies and lyrics. I’m currently challenging myself to write top-lines and lyrics first. My favorite thing to do is collaborate – either with singers or producers as I love the different dynamic this brings to my writing. I also write a lot of backing tracks to store (I’ve got around 150 at the moment)

If you could change about the music industry, what would it be?

I would remove all public-facing data from platforms – number of followers (Instagram), streams (Spotify), Views (You-Tube). I don’t think it’s healthy, particularity for younger, new artists and ultimately it doesn’t mean anything to the listener. You don’t like a band because they’ve got 1000 followers or not.

What’s in store for you for the rest of the year?

I’m currently doing a major passion project – writing synth-wave/retro-wave music (Think ‘Drive’ soundtrack, M83). This is my favorite genre and music I’ve always wanted to write so I’m pumped about it. I’ve written about 15 songs at the moment and hoping to release something early new year. I’m also writing some dance tunes with a DJ for a new project.

Tell MoggBlog viewers about your latest release! What’s the inspiration behind that?

When I left my band, The Kubricks, in 2019, I wanted to write something very different to the cartoon-style ska music we did in the band. So I started to approach some friends and artists that I admired and started to write music with them. This approach, collaborating, was the key inspiration behind my mix-tape, Community. Each song is different, and I wanted to mash-up genres to create music that was a little bit different and experimental.
