Released at the end of August on the 20th, Sugarcane return with their debut album ‘Cat’s Eyes’ via Frizz Records. Delivering a mixture of influences, the album features tropical rhythms inspired by Brazilian music as well as the band’s organic British songwriting. Speaking about his roots, Sugarcane main man Robin French had this to say, “Maybe samba and MPB attracted me because of how it balances oppositions – it’s black and white, it’s melancholy/reflective chords but propulsive, joyful rhythm. I remember looking at record sleeves in HMV and feeling intrigued that the musicians on the sleeves were mixed race like me.”
Receiving praise from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, EARMILK and Louder Than War, ‘Cat’s Eyes’ is certainly making waves in the industry. Featuring previous singles that have made the outfit a stronger household name, the album has something for everyone. From the political and debatable yet teasing number ‘Blondes Have More Fun’, to the attitude infused single ‘One Specific Thing’, from glistening heartfelt contender Clear Blue Sky – Sugarcane’s music always comes across as vibrant.
Deeply original with pure charisma, Sugarcane are going from strength to strength.
