I spoke with New Zealand based artist LearningToDive and we put the world to right! Read on to hear what made Bravo, aka the mind behind LTD, had to say about latest single Promenade, what made him decide to take up music and what’s the best advice he’d give to his younger self.
Introduce yourself (yourselves) and your hidden talent!
Hi! I’m Bravo Bonez from LearningToDive. I’m from New Zealand, but also base myself in London when there isn’t a coronavirus. One of my many secret talents is spending too much money!
What made you decide that music is the right path for you?
Well, my life has never been a single path really, as I enjoy markets and investments also (I know, very different to music), so I have oscillated between that and music over the past 4 years. But recently the music path now has a renewed level of energy and commitment going into it. The past 20 years I have been following the path of Mammon, but that really didn’t satisfy my life in any means expected. I had a midlife crisis and have since realised that I need to follow my passion, and that is the way I want to live, so that is what I am now committing to.
What’s the best advice you’d give to your younger self?
Oooo here we go. Stay off the booze, and I mean that *chuckles. But other than that, find a person or a group of people you can talk to, as a mentor, or an inspiration or even just for support. Doing that really makes the world of difference as you grow older. I feel if I had someone like that I wouldn’t have made half as many mistakes as I have in my life.
What’s in store for you for the rest of the year?
I’m releasing another single under ‘LearningToDive’ which didn’t quite fit into the Norwegian Pop album. I also have some more material for my solo project as Bravo Bonez. While doing that, I am also working on my live performance, playing violin, and learning bass, trumpet and DJing. I have a big show at the end of the year and am wanting to pull out a range of tricks and instruments to play with that.
Tell MoggBlog viewers about your latest release! What’s the inspiration behind that?
I’m guessing you’re talking about my latest single Promenade. This is a downtempo, new romantic, chill wave, synth driven piece of sophisti-pop, with the narrative revolving around the sad truth that you can really only be with one person at once, even if you love more than one. I drew inspiration from walking around Hyde Park when I lived in London. I would see people walking together and wonder if they had met in the park, and whether some of them were in illicit affairs. Hyde Park is such a beautiful park, in such a romantic setting, so I created a fictional narrative of two people meeting in the park walking on their lunch breaks and falling in love, but the relationship falling apart as it is based on lies. A morality tale of sorts. Nothing healthy is built on lies.
