Irish future-soul quintet Shookrah share new single “Notions”. Released September 20th via Broken Records, the jazz influenced track features the five-piece in their natural habitat. Receiving support from the BBC and racking up nearly 300k streams on streaming sites, the band have also shared the stage with Billy Ocean on his Irish tour. If you’re into Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote or Solange, Shookrah are right up your street.
“Notions” features an upbeat tempo that’s filled with a bright soundscape of textures and danceable beats. Leading the way, Senita’s vocals are vibrant and full of energy. Sticking to a summer feel, as Autumn is here, the personality of the track is exotic and feels like we should be drinking a cocktail while listening to it. Twisting through influences of funk, soul, disco and r’n’b, the track’s message isn’t all roses. About understanding the recognition of faults in a dysfunctional relationship, blending the context with fiery instrumentation really gives it a big middle fingers up to toxic people. Filled with sass and a whole other level of attitude, this is hands down one of the best songs of the year.
