Interview with Shaker Neon

To anyone new to your music, name 3 words that best describe your sound.

Wonky, Inventive, Colourful

What made you decide that music is the right path for you?

Dom: I grew up attending music schools, singing in choirs, I was totally immersed in music from the age of around 7 years old and started playing clarinet then.  I stole my sister’s guitar when I was around 12 and never looked back as it opened up another world to me. Can’t claim it made me look particularly cool etc, but I found that through music I could meet unusual people, go to unusual places and lead a generally speaking ‘unusual life’.  These three things are what I live for.

Who are your main musical influences and why?

Stylistically inspiration comes from all over the place, but when I look at the music that feeds into what we do, I think there’s always this unusual quirkiness and experimentation to it.  Whether it’s Dilla, Bowie, Prince, Flying Lotus, Beatles or Leonard Bernstein, there’s just always a funky kink in how the music is put together, often not really sitting in a genre, but continually pushing and inventing.  THAT’s the music that inspires us and what we listen to together.  We’re nuts about experimentation, and failing all the time in order to know where next to go.  Our songs end up getting reworked like 20 times before we think they find their little pocket in the universe where they can live.

What would be your dream support gig? Bonus points for place/venue.

Oh, really hard question.  Legends dying all the time!!  Maybe Daft Punk get back together, Pharrell does his few with them, and we open for the the show the Olympia in Paris.  That would be pretty much the pinacle.  Or Bob Dylan, as that’s the only was we’d probs ever get to meet him.

What’s in store for you for the rest of the year?

We want to grow Shaker Neon’s audience around the world and collaborate with new musicians and artists who expand our definition of what music is and can be.  We’re working towards recording our first album, and we wanna make a big splash with it.  We have some ace
new tunes in the final staged which we can’t wait to share.  Outside of Shaker Neon, Tommy writes musicals and Dom writes film scores, so we’ll both be busy doing all that.  Dom’s just done a toilet paper advert.
