Interview with Celiane the Voice

Based out of the Bay Area in California, Celiane The Voice is a pioneering and dynamic singer who specializes in genre of Hip-Hopera.

What made you decide music was the right path for you?

Music is something that I feel all through me. I have been making up songs and singing since I was 5. It was the only way I truly felt free and like myself. I was given this voice for a reason, and I knew that I needed to use it. I didn’t necessarily want the opera path, but it is what my voice was made for; however, I realized that music didn’t have to be a particular genre for me, it just needs to be the language I understand. Music for me is a totally different experience that moves through me and around me. There are no words when it flows with you and you see how much elevated you become. I knew if I loved it this much, then that is what I needed to be doing for a living.

If you could change the music industry, what would it be?

I would change the perception of how talent needs to be categorized. It is about who can be replaced instead of there is room for everyone. Everyone processes and perceives music in their own way. They perform it in their own way. That makes for a variety of interpretations that makes it so interesting. Because I am middle aged, plus-size, disabled and don’t fit the norm, I had to decide from the beginning this would be difficult because of how people perceive talent should be or look like. Some of us know, anyone can create and walk this path, but to those holding the keys, they want a certain age, look, gimmick; they want what they think is a money maker everyone wants to see. It should be based on true talent to create the best possible interpretation of the art.

What would be my dream support gig? Bonus points for venue/place.

My dream support gig would be having my show on Broadway as a full-time show. It is my dream to present my concept of audible art to the world in a way the world has never seen. There are many places I want to perform, but when I have the chance to be a headliner, New York is one of the main destinations.

To anyone new to your music, name three words that best describe your sound.

My sound is a blend of electronica, dub-step, hip-hop beat, strong bass line, and classical elements, which includes my voice. So my sound described in three words would be risky, blended and out of the box.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive who would it be?

If I could collaborate with anyone, it would be the Gorillaz. I have loved their sound for years and how they express their music as audible art. I love the feel of their brashness in story form. When I taught band, I had a student introduce me to their sound and had been in love with the band ever since. I would love to work with them on a project, that would be a dream come true.
