Starting as actors (with credits along side the likes of Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and Michael Rapeport), ‘Tall Boy Special’ got their momentum during the 2020 lockdowns with viral success on TikTok. Tall Boy Special’s viral hit Fictional Aisle was featured on the final episode of CBS’ “Greatest #AtHome Videos” in a segment called Cedric the Entertainer’s Picks of the Week. The episode aired in November 2020 to 3.26M viewers. Since then, this viral hit has organically amassed 237K+ views on TikTok, 18K+ views on YouTube, and 237K+ streams on Spotify — where they also just hit 5K subscribers and 7K monthly listeners.
To anyone new to your music, name 3 words that best describe your sound.
Hilarious. Funky. Tallboyspecial
What made you decide that music is the right path for you?
COVID 19! We moved to LA, did comedy once, Covid hit. Put music online. The world rejoiced.
What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?
80% of the time we write the lyrics first. Our lyrics are what sets us apart from other bands and we are very careful and meticulous with each word and storyline. Sometimes we find a genre we like and want to write to that genre, and think of the idea second after we’ve written a section of music. (Worldeaterblog.com, Theme Song, for instance off the new album. Senior beach day and ghost war off old albums.) but usually it’s about the lyrics baby.
If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?
It’s not so much change as is it we wish the industry would revert to how it once was. But that makes us sound old. We wish the industry was still album centric and not all about the singles. We wish labels took chances on less polished talent and had bigger artist development budgets. We wish Sam Goody was still open and we could bring our allowance and pick ONE album because two is too expensive. But since we don’t want to be close minded to change we hope that this age of technology continues to connect music makers with audiences that they never could have imagined in the past. More specifically to our genre, we hope to create a renaissance in the comedy music industry. Rather than feeling like comedy cheapens music or vice versa, we hope that we can continue the blending of these two art forms making it more legitimate to the masses.
Tell MoggBlog viewers about your latest release! What’s the inspiration behind that?
our new album is called 19 Total Feet. It’s our first full length album and our first studio album. It is without a doubt, the most FUN album put out in the last decade by ANYONE. You’ve never heard anything like this. Each song off the 12 track album is a fully fleshed out world of its own. Each world has its laws and customs that exist only in the Tall Boy Special Universe. These songs are to be listened to over and over again to process each complex nook and cranny of the world being presented. It’s also just super silly and fun and full of bops…. Or whatever you call them in the UK
