I had a good chinwag with one of the finest indie artists on the circuit, Hongza. We chatted about musical influences, if he writes the music or lyrics first and debut EP ‘Gen Z‘.

Introduce yourself (yourselves) and your hidden talent!
Hi guys! My name is Hongza I am an artist from North London with Vietnamese heritage. I like to skate and make shoegaze music for the world. Oh and I really like making TikToks.
What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?
It varies all the time, sometimes I’ll write the instrumentation with my band other times I’ll be in a writing session with a producer or I’ll write a song from scratch on an acoustic guitar! I like having variety when it comes to songwriting. I do think my best songs come out when I’m sad though so that has to be a given for any writing session.
Who are your main musical influences and why?
This is such a hard question to answer because I feel like artists inspiration can change everyday depending on their mood and what they’re listening to. But if I was to pin it down I love shoegaze there’s something about 90’s shoegaze that wows me. My Bloody Valentine – Loveless, Ride – Nowhere two amazing albums. I’m also a huge The 1975 fan, the first album and EP’s are so nostalgic to me.

What’s the inspiration behind that?My debut EP Gen Z is a coming of age soundtrack for me! It goes through the topics of toxic social media culture, the cycle of online dating, recovering and surviving a global pandemic & my identity crisis growing up as an Asian man in the UK. I feel like all these things are so relatable to anyone growing up especially Gen Z’s.
