Interview with Yellow Trash Can

I sat, virtually, down with Portland based duo Yellow Trash Can to chat about musical influences, what’s in store for the rest of 2021 and what the music scene is like in Portland. The power of the internet is amazing, isn’t it?

Introduce yourself (yourselves) and your hidden talent!

We are Yellow Trash Can, a duo from Portland / LA, Jason Navarrete and Jordan Devin. We are a one stop shop for all of our own creative necessities.  Whether it’s animations, videos. Production campaign management.  We do it all just between us two. We’ve both been making music for quite a while now, and just when we started working on stuff it just made a lot of sense.  Sonically we are diverse, yet overlap on some crucial elements that unify what YTC is.

What’s your writing process like? Do you write the music or lyrics first?

We always write the music first.  We perform with voice notes, over writing.  To capture the energy with the words, rather then trying to find the energy later.  We always go back into the later records, to finish W/ post production.

Who are your main musical influences and why?

Modest Mouse, N.E.R.D, Brand New, Weezer, Josh Hodges, The Cure, Conan Mockasin.  – I love the songs growth on the tracks with Modest Mouse.  The tones and guitar whales etc. all build throughout the track.  N.E.R.D / Pharell is a favorite for jitt because it was the first artist he heard blend genres.  Mashed Alt, Hip-hop, rock, pop etc.  Brand New for the guitar and deep tones.

What’s in store for you for the rest of the year?

Man this year, lots and lots and lots of work.  We have a few more singles coming out, and potentially an album.  We have an album we cowrote and produced for Myke Bogan, an album we cowrote / produced for Briana Piedra.  Few dif singles we produced for artists as well as another album secretly in the works for someone else….  We are also starting to twitch this summer, which we are super stoked to continuing through out the remainder of the year.

What’s the music scene like where you are from?

Portland Music scene is rad, there is a ton of talent in all genres.  Lot of artists really contributing to an eclectic and exciting scene. Tons of local shows happening through out the week pre-covid.  Jitt’s from Connecticut, the music scene is very west indie and hiphop oriented.  Great venue called Toads place, which is where all the local acts perform.
