Folk-ing Sublime #3

Two exceptional artists for you to get your ears around today. All residing in a breathtaking indie-folk soundscape, these tunes will leave you feeling calm for the weekend ahead.

DENNI IAN – I PLAN TO RUN OUT OF DARKNESS

A delicate offering with a gentle dash of traditional and experimental songwriting thrown in for extra spice, as soon as I heard this release, I had to review it. ‘I Plan To Run Out Of Darkness’ is lifted from Denni Ian’s SALT KING – one of the most gorgeous releases I’ve heard in ages. Finding itself at a cross between indie folk and art rock, there are even elements of post-punk and straight indie that I can hear throughout the single and overall album. ‘I Plan To Run Out Of Darkness’ is hopeful and theatrical and layered with cryptic lyrics that come across as confessional and something that leans you in further to get the full picture.

Speaking about the album, Denni Ian shares: “The album features a delicate blend of traditional and experimental songwriting, echoing a distinctive sense of amore disperato. I Plan to Run Out of Darkness” delivers a three act alternative folk-rock ballad with a haunting anthem, poetic narrative and dramatic vocal solo.

Armed with a video that has a feeling of loneliness and absence, the overall concept of the visuals are inspired by the presence of tragedy in your life and how hard it is to shake it off. Relatable and an artist that reminds me of artists in the same vein as Nick Cave, I love how artistic Denni Ian’s music is.

STUART LAWRENCE – ONE

A debut release has to draw your attention and hold your gaze, but sometimes it can be easier said than done. That’s not the case for Stuart Lawrence’s debut. It’s atmospheric and coated with gorgeous acoustic rock elements that artists such as Neil Young would only dream about. Whilst the album is fuelled with indie rock elements and alternative rock moments, ‘To The Limit’ is a leading single that shows Stuart’s inspirations all at once. It’s lively and mirrors an artist who knows exactly what he wants in this hectic industry.

Speaking about how he got into the industry, Stuart shares: “I kept saying ‘I will one day,’ but that day never seemed to arrive. And then one day I said, ‘if not now then when?’ So here I am, better late than never. I’m not the weathered old ‘rock die hard’ that my appearance might suggest, this is very new for me, and a fresh journey. Now this might sound a bit silly. The songs that I write appear to me like spirits might appear to a clairvoyant.

I think if you’ve got talent that needs to be heard, you need to play to people. Overall, the album is quite emotional and shows heartfelt lyrics that touch upon themes of empathy and growth. This is first and foremost and artist that comes across as professional and best described as a ‘storyteller’.
