Folk-ing Sublime #2

Three exceptional artists for you to get your ears around today. All residing in a breathtaking folk soundscape, these tunes will leave you feeling calm for the rest of the week ahead!

JEREMY PARSONS – LIFE WORTH DYIN’ FOR

As soon as I heard this song, I knew I had to reach out to Jeremy to cover this song. A gorgeous offering with a stunning soundscape that could easily soothe the soul, it’s Jeremy’s vocals that pulled me in further when they came transparent. The track explores living a life that someone would be content with, something we can all relate to and strive to capture. Musically, the song is armed with honest, intimate lyricism, a passionate slide guitar that soars like a bird freely in the sky and ambitious instrumentation that could solidify this artist at the top of his game in the Americana

“Every morning I wake up, and I check in with myself. I have a whole roll call of questions and thoughts. One is if I’m happy with my journey and the path that I’m on still. It’s never come close to leaning toward a no. Another critical question is, if it all ended today or even right there at that moment, would I feel content with the life that I lived? The answer is always a resounding yes,” Parsons says.

Jeremy is certainly going to grab life by both hands if he writes music like this and achieves his dream in no time.

HAPPY CURMUDGEONS – 2ND CHANCES

Armed with an atmospheric, vintage sound to the production, there’s something about 2nd Chances that draws me every time I hear it. It reminds me of a classic Lynyrd Skynyrd track but if they collaborated with Led Zeppelin’s acoustic persona. Amy Dixon-Lavery’s vocals are calming and come across as professional and able to tell a story note-perfect. She could ring the phonebook and it would sound incredible!

Speaking about the track, the group shared: “The song is about getting a 2nd chance on love and life. We all make mistakes, but how you recover and move on is very important.

Taken from an album that’s due out at the end of the year, there’s a real folk-rock essence in this track that channels iconic roots bands like The Byrds and The Band perfectly. Musically, the track is situated around a simple chord progression but progresses into a statement. The band are clearly stating that this is the type of music that needs a fresh face… and the face? Well… Happy Curmudgeons. Alternative country has a new sheriff in town and you can hear it in this exceptional group. This band have me hooked!

FELLOW HOLLOW – DUTCH ELM DISEASE

You’re sat in a calm setting. Enters a calming acoustic guitar that channels Bear’s Den and Big Thief all at once. You’re sitting listening to Fellow Hollow. Life is good. That’s exactly how this band makes me feel time and time again. The third track from their new album ‘Boughs of Teeth’, the group shares: “It’s an an album that explores the space in between the natural and the unnatural, the real and the unreal, the ethereal and the ephemeral—and both the beauty and the terror that result in trying to bridge their divides, in bringing them too close together.

The harmonies that the band gel together are out of this world and like something you’d hear the Beach Boys do in the ’70s that cemented their legendary status. Musically, the track weaves through contemporary chord progressions but looks back at intricate folk finger-picking arrangements and makes them entirely their own. Sounding like something you’ve never heard before, there’s something so innovative about their songwriting and I believe it’s their chemistry. Fellow Hollow is this group and no one else.

Don’t forget, they’ve got a full album for you to get your teeth into!
