Folk-ing Sublime #1

Three exceptional artists for you to get your ears around today. All residing in a breathtaking folk soundscape, these tunes will leave you feeling calm for your Bank Holiday weekend!

ROSS STEWART – LAND’S END

For a debut single, you need something that’s going to stand out from the rest. Ross Stewart’s ‘Land’s End’ does exactly that. A euphoric Americana track with a mesmerising chord progression, this track doesn’t stick to the usual rulebook. It bends the rules of folk with a gentle pop structure to get its relatable story across. Ross’ vocals are armed with a gorgeous tone that is contemporary yet feels nostalgic and like something you’ve loved for a long time.

Speaking about creating music, Ross shares: “During the uncertain times of the pandemic and the general halting of normal life, I took my opportunity to start writing, self-producing and releasing my own music. I can admit it was all done quite crudely and the result was positively amateur. This time however is much different. I have a strong backing and a strong will. I think that comes across in my song.

You’d be forgiven for thinking of him as a young John Mayer, but it’s wiser not to pigeonhole. This is an artist about to make a name for himself, and I’m excited I’m here from the very beginning.

CONCRETE GREEN – LAZY LOU

An alternative folk artist with layers of personality, Concrete Green is the musical project of Daniel Green, a soul-searching musician you’re instantly going to fall in love with. Concrete Green marks his arrival as a solo artist with a wealth of experience and versatility now reinforcing his own distinctive voice as a cool, aloof observer of urban society. Armed with a lyricism that is relatable, humourous, and sometimes melancholic, this is an artist that refuses to be limited to one style. Bending genres with his charming songwriting, he says he draws influence from The Beatles, Radiohead… and South Park!

Diving headfirst into a tale of a “30-year-old stoner search for meaning”, the track explores religion and trying to find your feet in a hectic world. It navigates through themes of identity and responsibility and leaves me sticking it on repeat every time I hear it. My favourite part of the song has to be the captivating chord progression. You don’t know exactly where this song is going to end up, and that’s what makes it so pioneering.

Easily one of my favourite discoveries in recent months.

DOMINIC ROMANO – AFTER WE’RE GONE

Sometimes when you leave a relationship, you don’t realise it until you’ve left how damaging it truly was. ‘After We’re Gone” is about exactly that feeling. A gentle folk song with a gorgeous amount of harmonics, Dominic Romano’s latest creation is possibly his most vulnerable song to date. Getting personal with his listeners, the lyricism really draws you in and lets you interpret it however you like. To me, this feels like a sort of healing song and a form of therapy. It’s stating that you can rebuild, even if you’re heartbroken.

I think it’s a great reminder to his audience that you can always bounce back. As a production, After We’re Gone is one of Dominic’s most ambitious and epic-sounding projects to date. Recorded in his professional studio in northern California, Dominic worked with some incredibly talented people to bring this whole piece to life. A charming single that could find its way creeping up the folk charts as a strong contender, the intimate vocals stole the limelight for me.

“after we’re gone is one those songs that is still teaching me how to talk about it. Recovering from something like this is a journey that takes a while.” – Dominic Romano
